Immerse yourself in the fun with the Omaha Public Library’s Summer Reading Program | Lifestyles

Summer has arrived and it’s time for the Omaha Public Library’s annual summer reading program. From now until July 31, it’s all about reading for fun and (although reading is its own reward) for a chance to win some great prizes while you’re at it.

Visit your favorite OPL branch, or call 402-444-4800 to register. Children and teens will receive a free book just for signing up. Complete any combination of 10 activities or hours of reading/listening and track your activity to reach your goals.

When goals are met, participating youth receive another book, a coupon for the Omaha Public Library Book Sale, and a voucher to attend a free Omaha Storm Chasers baseball game on August 3 or 7. They will also be entered into a draw. for additional prices. Adults can also win prizes.

This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities”, and the library staff really got into it. Branches listen to the sea with decorations that even earthlings will love. The staff also put up book lists and displays with titles about water or the creatures that live in the ocean.

Don’t forget the many programs and events happening at OPL throughout the summer. For the first time in two years, OPL is pleased to welcome customers for in-person summer programs at its 12 branches. For those who prefer online events, many options are still available. Choose from story times, book clubs, escape rooms and more. Join Diventures representatives to learn more about scuba diving, marine ecology and wrecks. Diventures staff along with American Red Cross partners will also teach water safety techniques.

Of course, many of the programs that OPL customers enjoy and look forward to each year will also be on view. Youth Services Librarians will present story hours in various parks, gardens and spray fields. Beloved storybook characters Pout Pout Fish and Penelope the dinosaur will be visiting story times throughout the city. Friends of 4-H, Papio NRD and Wildlife Encounters will introduce participants to animals from the land, sea and air. Finally, the BPO will virtually welcome three successful authors this summer: Chris Grabenstein, Samira Ahmed and Gordon Korman. Since these events take place online, attendees have the option to watch from home or join others at watch parties held at various OPL locations. The full program of events is available at omahalibrary.orgor pick up a program booklet or branch calendar at your local library.

With so many fun activities and events, it’s easy to forget the real reason for the summer reading program. It is important, especially for school-aged participants, to keep their minds active and engaged during the summer holidays and be ready to return to school in the fall. For everyone else, participating in the Summer Reading Program is a great example for the young people in their lives to reap the rewards of reading – because reading has been proven to reduce stress, increase concentration and improve sleep, among other benefits.

Presenting sponsor, The Richard Brooke Foundation, and many other generous sponsors help make the program possible. The Omaha Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Omaha Public Library provided additional support for the program.
